Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

  6. 6

    Optional: Add Chocolate Chips

If using, fold in the chocolate chips into the batter.

Baking

  1. 7

    Pour Batter

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

  2. 8

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  3. 9

    Cool Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting (Optional)

  1. 10

    Prepare Frosting

You can frost the cake with your favorite chocolate frosting if desired.

  2. 11

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, spread frosting on top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides.
