Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the beef patties

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.

  2. 2

    Prepare the toppings

Slice the tomato and red onion into thin rings. Set aside. If using whole pickles, slice them into rounds.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the patties

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Place the beef patties on the grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip the patties and cook for another 4-5 minutes or until they reach your desired doneness.

  2. 4

    Melt the cheese

In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty. Close the grill lid or cover the skillet to help the cheese melt.

Assembly

  1. 5

    Assemble the burgers

Toast the burger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster. Spread a generous amount of hickory BBQ sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place the cooked patty with melted cheese on top, followed by slices of tomato, pickles, and red onion. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.
