Method

Biscuit Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.

  3. 3

    Cut in Butter

Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the cold unsalted butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

    Add Buttermilk

Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until just combined; do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Shape the Biscuit

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat it into a 1-inch thick round. Cut out a biscuit using a biscuit cutter or a glass.

  6. 6

    Bake the Biscuit

Place the biscuit on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Gravy Preparation

  1. 7

    Cook the Sausage

In a skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 8

    Make the Roux

Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

  3. 9

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 10

    Season the Gravy

Add salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste. Stir well and remove from heat.
