Method
Preparation
- 1
Slice the tomatoes
Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into 1/4-inch thick slices.
- 2
Prepare the wet mixture
In a bowl, combine the buttermilk and egg. Whisk together until well combined.
- 3
Prepare the dry mixture
In another bowl, mix together the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until evenly combined.
Coating
- 4
Coat the tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice into the wet mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the dry mixture to coat evenly.
Frying
- 5
Heat the oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
- 6
Fry the tomatoes
Carefully add the coated tomato slices to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
- 7
Drain and serve
Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
