Method
Sauce Preparation
- 1
- 2
Add the Tomatoes
Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, crushing them slightly with a spoon. Stir in 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of sugar.
- 3
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
Pizza Assembly
- 4
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to the highest temperature (usually around 475°F or 250°C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat up.
- 5
Roll Out the Dough
On a floured surface, stretch or roll out the pizza dough into a round shape, about 12 inches in diameter. Transfer it to a piece of parchment paper for easy handling.
- 6
Spread the Tomato Sauce
Spread a generous amount of the prepared tomato sauce over the dough, leaving about 1 inch of the edge for the crust.
- 7
Add the Cheeses
Tear the fresh mozzarella into pieces and distribute them evenly over the sauce. Grate the pecorino cheese and sprinkle it on top.
- 8
Bake the Pizza
Carefully slide the pizza (with parchment) onto the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
- 9
Add Fresh Basil and Olive Oil
Once out of the oven, immediately tear fresh basil leaves and scatter them over the hot pizza. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil to finish.
- 10
Slice and Serve
Allow the pizza to cool for a minute before slicing. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Margherita pizza!
