For the Pattie Melt
Method
Cooking the Patties and Onions
Prepare the Onions
Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the onions and a pinch of salt, sautéing until they are caramelized, about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
Form the Patties
In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, then form into two equal patties.
Cook the Patties
In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
Assembling the Pattie Melt
Toast the Bread
While the patties are cooking, toast the rye bread until golden brown.
Assemble the Melt
Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and let it melt slightly. On two slices of toasted rye bread, place the patties with melted cheese, top with sautéed onions, and cover with the remaining slices of bread.
