Pretzel Dough

Method

Pretzel Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a bowl, combine warm water, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Make Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour the yeast mixture and melted butter into the flour. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.

  4. 4

    Shape Pretzels

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Punch down the dough and divide into equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape into a pretzel.

  5. 5

    Prepare Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  6. 6

    Bake Pretzels

Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top of the pretzels. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
