Pita Bread Ingredients

Method

Pita Bread Directions

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Make Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape Pitas

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a disc about 1/4 inch thick.

  6. 6

    Second Rise

Cover the discs with a towel and let them rest for another 30 minutes.

  7. 7

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or an upside-down baking sheet inside to heat.

  8. 8

    Bake Pitas

Carefully place the pitas on the hot baking stone or sheet and bake for 3-5 minutes, or until they puff up and are lightly browned.

  9. 9

    Cool Down

Remove the pitas from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
