Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Method

Prepare the Fries

  1. 1

    Cut the Potatoes

Wash and cut the Russet potatoes into thick fries (about 1/2 inch thick).

  2. 2

    Soak the Fries

Soak the cut fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Fry the Potatoes

Drain the fries and pat them dry. Fry them in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Season the Fries

While still hot, sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

Prepare the Grilled Cheese

  1. 6

    Cook the Bacon (optional)

If adding bacon, cook it in a skillet until crispy, then set aside.

  2. 7

    Assemble the Sandwich

Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, buttered side down, in a skillet over medium heat. Layer with American cheese, and if using, bacon. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.

  3. 8

    Grill the Sandwich

Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown, then flip and grill the other side until the cheese melts and the bread is golden brown, about another 3-4 minutes.

  4. 9

    Serve

Cut the grilled cheese in half and serve alongside the thick cut fries.
