For the Calamari

For the Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparing the Marinara Sauce

  1. 1

    Cook the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 2

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, sugar, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir to combine.

  3. 3

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 4

    Finish the Sauce

Stir in the chopped fresh basil and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 5

    Prepare the Coating

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  2. 6

    Set Up the Breading Station

In another bowl, beat the eggs. Place the breadcrumbs in a third bowl.

  3. 7

    Bread the Calamari

Dip each squid ring into the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Place on a baking sheet.

  4. 8

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat 2 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F).

  5. 9

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add a few squid rings to the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  6. 10

    Serve

Serve the fried calamari hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
