Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until evenly mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Shortening

Add the vegetable shortening to the dry ingredients. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend the shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Incorporate Water

Gradually add the warm water to the mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to come together.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Frying the Sopapillas

  1. 5

    Heat Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  2. 6

    Roll Out the Dough

After the dough has rested, divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece out on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick.

  3. 7

    Cut the Dough

Cut the rolled dough into squares, about 3 inches by 3 inches.

  4. 8

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place a few pieces of dough into the hot oil. Fry them until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serving the Sopapillas

  1. 9

    Prepare for Serving

While the sopapillas are still warm, drizzle them with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon.

  2. 10

    Serve

Serve immediately while warm. Enjoy your delicious sopapillas!
