Tortilla Ingredients
Method
Making the Tortillas
- 1
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of masa harina and 0.5 tsp of salt. Mix well until the salt is evenly distributed.
- 2
Add Water and Oil
Gradually add 1.5 cups of water and 1 tbsp of vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir with a spoon or your hands until the dough begins to form.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a clean surface and knead it for about 2-3 minutes until it is smooth and pliable. If the dough feels too dry, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time. If it is too sticky, sprinkle in a bit more masa harina.
- 4
Divide and Shape the Dough
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Cover them with a damp cloth to prevent drying out.
- 5
Flatten the Dough
Using a tortilla press or a rolling pin, flatten each ball between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper to about 1/8 inch thick.
- 6
Cook the Tortillas
Heat a comal or non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, cook each tortilla for about 30-45 seconds on each side, or until lightly browned and cooked through. Keep them warm by stacking them in a clean kitchen towel.
- 7
Serve
Serve the tortillas warm as a side dish with your favorite meals, or use them to make tacos, enchiladas, or quesadillas.
