Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pasta

Boil the penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Cook the Ground Beef

In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until translucent. Add ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.

  3. 3

    Combine Beef and Sauce

Stir in the tomato sauce, salt, black pepper, and oregano into the skillet with beef. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

  4. 4

    Mix Pasta and Beef

In a large bowl, combine the drained pasta with the beef mixture and half of the grated parmesan cheese. Mix well.

  5. 5

    Make Béchamel Sauce

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook until the sauce thickens, then stir in nutmeg and salt.

  6. 6

    Assemble the Pastichio

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a greased baking dish, layer the pasta and meat mixture. Pour the béchamel sauce over the top and sprinkle with remaining parmesan cheese.

  7. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

  8. 8

    Prepare the House Salad

In a bowl, combine chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sliced cucumber. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice, season with salt and pepper to taste, and toss well.

  9. 9

    Serve

Let the pastichio cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve with the house salad on the side.
