Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Grape Leaves

If using fresh grape leaves, blanch them in boiling water for about 2 minutes until softened. If using jarred leaves, rinse them under cold water to remove excess salt.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Filling

In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Stir in the rice and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.

  3. 3

    Mix the Filling

Remove the skillet from heat and add the parsley, dill, mint, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

Stuffing the Grape Leaves

  1. 4

    Stuff the Leaves

Place a grape leaf shiny side down on a flat surface. Add about 1 tablespoon of the rice mixture at the base of the leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll it tightly from the base to the tip. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.

Cooking

  1. 5

    Prepare for Cooking

In a large pot, layer the stuffed grape leaves seam side down. Place the lemon slice on top and drizzle with the remaining olive oil.

  2. 6

    Add Liquid

Pour water or vegetable broth over the stuffed leaves until they are just covered.

  3. 7

    Cook the Grape Leaves

Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 45 minutes until the rice is tender and the leaves are cooked through.

  4. 8

    Serve

Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature with additional lemon slices on the side.
