Main Ingredients

Béchamel Sauce

Salad

Method

Preparation of Béchamel Sauce

  1. 1

    Make the Béchamel Sauce

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is a light golden color.

  2. 2

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 3

    Season the Sauce

Add the nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.

Assembling the Croque Monsieur

  1. 4

    Prepare the Bread

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Take 4 slices of white bread and spread a generous layer of the béchamel sauce on one side of each slice.

  2. 5

    Add Ham and Cheese

Layer a slice of country ham and a thin layer of grated Gruyère cheese on top of the béchamel. Top with another slice of bread, béchamel side down.

  3. 6

    Top with Cheese

Spread more béchamel sauce on top of the sandwiches and sprinkle with additional grated Gruyère cheese.

Cooking

  1. 7

    Bake the Sandwiches

Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread is golden brown.

Preparing the Salad

  1. 8

    Prepare Salad Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the mixed greens and halved cherry tomatoes.

  2. 9

    Dress the Salad

Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Toss gently to combine.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Dish

Once the Croque Monsieur is out of the oven, let it cool for a minute. Cut the sandwiches in half and serve on plates alongside the side salad.
