Beef Patties
Buns & Cheese
Toppings & Condiments
Method
Beef Patties
Portion & Shape
Divide the mixture into two equal portions (about 4–5 oz each). Gently form each portion into a round patty slightly larger than the bun, about 3–3.5 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick. Press a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook flat.
Cook
Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the butter or oil and let it melt and coat the surface. When the skillet is hot (but not smoking), place the patties in the pan. Cook for about 3–4 minutes on the first side without pressing. Flip and cook another 2–3 minutes for medium (adjust +/- 1 minute for doneness). During the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover the pan with a lid to help the cheese melt.
Rest
Transfer cooked patties to a plate and let rest 2 minutes to redistribute juices.
Buns & Cheese
If you prefer, warm the whole bun in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 3–4 minutes instead of pan toasting.
Assembly & Toppings
Cut the burger in half for easier handling by young children, serve immediately alongside optional carrot sticks or apple slices.
