Pasta

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook the Linguine

Add the linguine to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 9-11 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the linguine in a colander.

Making the Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Sauté the Garlic

Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute, until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  3. 6

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon as you add them to the skillet.

  4. 7

    Season the Sauce

Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  5. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.

  6. 9

    Add Fresh Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves just before removing the sauce from heat.

Combining Pasta and Sauce

  1. 10

    Combine

Add the drained linguine to the marinara sauce in the skillet. Toss to coat the pasta evenly, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time if needed to loosen the sauce.

Serving

  1. 11

    Plate the Dish

Serve the linguine marinara in bowls or on plates, garnishing with grated Parmesan cheese and whole fresh basil leaves as desired.
