Fried Oysters

Method

Fried Oysters

  1. 1

    Prepare the Oysters

Rinse the fresh oysters under cold running water to remove any sand or grit. Pat them dry using paper towels and set aside.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In three separate shallow dishes, place the flour, a mixture of cornmeal with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in the second, and the buttermilk mixed with beaten eggs in the third.

  3. 3

    Bread the Oysters

Dip each oyster first into the flour, then into the buttermilk and egg mixture, and finally coat with the cornmeal mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Oysters

Carefully add the breaded oysters to the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Remove the fried oysters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot.

Cocktail Sauce

  1. 7

    Mix the Ingredients

In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and salt. Stir until well mixed.

  2. 8

    Taste and Adjust

Taste the cocktail sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more horseradish for heat or salt for flavor.

  3. 9

    Serve

Transfer the cocktail sauce to a serving bowl and serve alongside the fried oysters.
