Phyllo Dough Preparation

Honey Syrup

Method

Phyllo Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, lay out the phyllo sheets and keep them covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out while you work.

  2. 2

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Make sure not to burn it. Once melted, set aside to cool slightly.

Nut Filling

  1. 3

    Prepare the Nut Filling

In a large bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well until fully combined.

Layering and Baking

  1. 4

    Layer the Baklava

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process for about 8 sheets, brushing each layer with butter.

  2. 5

    Add Nut Filling

Spread a thin layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo layers. Add another 4 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with melted butter. Repeat the layering process, alternating between nut filling and phyllo dough until all the nuts are used, ending with about 8 sheets of phyllo on top, brushed with butter.

  3. 6

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, ensuring you cut through to the bottom of the dish.

  4. 7

    Bake the Baklava

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.

Honey Syrup

  1. 8

    Prepare the Honey Syrup

While the baklava is baking, prepare the honey syrup. In a saucepan, combine water, granulated sugar, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.

  2. 9

    Pour Syrup Over Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Allow it to soak in and cool completely before serving.
