Method
Meatballs
- 1
Prepare Meatball Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- 2
Form Meatballs
Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet.
- 3
Bake Meatballs
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes or until cooked through and browned.
Marinara Sauce
- 4
Sauté Aromatics
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 6
Combine Meatballs with Sauce
Once the meatballs are done baking, add them to the marinara sauce and let them simmer together for an additional 5 minutes.
Sandwich Assembly
- 7
Prepare Sub Rolls
Slice the sub rolls in half lengthwise. If desired, toast the rolls in the oven for a few minutes.
- 8
Assemble Sandwiches
Place a few meatballs on the bottom half of each sub roll. Spoon marinara sauce over the meatballs, then top with provolone cheese slices and a sprinkle of grated Romano cheese.
- 9
Melt Cheese
Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch closely to prevent burning.
- 10
Serve
Remove from the oven, let cool for a minute, then serve hot!
