Preparation Steps
- 1
Prepare the Sticky Rice
Soak the sticky rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain the rice before using.
- 2
Prepare the Banana Leaves
Soften the banana leaves by briefly steaming or passing them over an open flame until pliable. Cut into square pieces, around 10x10 inches.
- 3
Make the Coconut Mixture
In a saucepan, combine coconut milk, sugar, and salt. Heat gently until the sugar dissolves. Let it cool slightly.
- 4
Assemble the Khao Tom Mud
Place a layer of soaked sticky rice on a banana leaf, then add a baby banana in the center. Pour a little coconut mixture over the banana and cover with more sticky rice.
- 5
Wrap the Packages
Fold the banana leaf over the rice and banana to create a parcel. Secure with kitchen twine or toothpicks.
- 6
Steam the Parcels
Place the wrapped parcels in a steamer. Steam for about 30-40 minutes until the rice is tender.
- 7
Serve
Remove the parcels from the steamer, let them cool slightly, then unwrap and serve warm.
