Preparation

1

Slice the Onions

Peel and slice the large onions into thick rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Separate the rings and set aside.

Batter Preparation

2

Mix the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well combined.

3

Add Wet Ingredients

Add the cold water and the egg to the dry mixture. Whisk until you achieve a smooth batter with no lumps.

Frying

4

Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, the oil is ready.

5

Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure to coat it evenly. Allow any excess batter to drip off.

6

Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan.

7

Drain and Serve

Once cooked, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
