Directions

1

Prepare the Okra

Wash the fresh okra under cold running water. Trim the stem ends and slice the okra into 1/2-inch thick rounds.

2

Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well until evenly combined.

3

Coat the Okra

Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each slice of okra into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until well coated.

4

Heat the Oil

In a large skillet or frying pan, pour in the vegetable oil to a depth of about 1 inch. Heat over medium-high heat until the oil reaches 350°F (175°C).

5

Fry the Okra

Working in batches, carefully add the coated okra slices to the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even cooking.

6

Drain and Serve

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried okra from the oil and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
