For the Onion Straws
Method
Preparation Steps
- 1
Slice the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
- 2
Soak in Buttermilk
Place the onion rings in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
- 3
Prepare the Coating
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Coat the Onion Rings
Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge them in the flour mixture until well coated.
- 6
Fry the Onion Straws
Carefully drop the coated onion rings into the hot oil in batches. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 7
Serve
Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
