Base Cocktail

Method

Base Cocktail

  1. 1

    Combine and chill

Add the dark spiced rum, mezcal, fresh lime juice, blood orange juice, ginger liqueur (or ginger syrup), honey syrup, and Angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice.

  2. 2

    Shake vigorously

Shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the shaker exterior is very cold and well diluted. This ensures the honey syrup and citrus integrate and the mezcal's smoke brightens the mix.

  3. 3

    Prepare glass

If serving 'up' (no ice in glass), double-strain into a chilled coupe. For on-the-rocks service, place a single large ice cube or sphere into a rocks glass and strain over the ice. If serving tall, fill a highball with cracked ice and pour over it.

Smoke & Flame (garnish/finish)

  1. 4

    Rim or salt accent

Optionally, wet a small portion of the glass rim with a cut lime wedge and dip that spot into a pinch of smoked sea salt to add an ashy, apocalyptic edge.

  2. 5

    Express the oils

Hold the orange peel over the prepared drink, skin side down, and give it a sharp squeeze to release the citrus oils onto the surface. Rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  3. 6

    Flame (optional and with caution)

For dramatic presentation: place a small metal spoon above the drink, pour the 0.25 oz of overproof rum into the spoon and carefully ignite it with a long lighter. Allow the flame to burn briefly (5–7 seconds) to impart caramelized aromatics, then extinguish by covering with another spoon or blowing it out before placing the garnish. Do not attempt if you are uncomfortable with open flame; omit and proceed safely.

Ice & Serve

  1. 7

If served on the rocks, adjust dilution: a large ice cube will melt slowly and keep the drink balanced. If served tall over cracked ice, give the drink a gentle stir once poured to marry ingredients and distribute chill.

  2. 8

Serve immediately with a small warning: the 'flame' garnish may still be hot. Present as 'N/A Apocalypse — The Send is Near.' Enjoy responsibly.
