Measure & Combine
Using a jigger, measure 1.5 oz El Tesoro tequila reposado and 0.5 oz Del Maguey San Luis del Río mezcal into a mixing glass or directly into an Old Fashioned glass if you prefer fewer dishes.
Add Sweetener & Bitters
Add 0.25 oz (about 1/2 tablespoon) agave nectar and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the spirits.
Add Ice & Stir
If using a mixing glass, fill it with ice and stir briskly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted. If mixing in the serving glass, add one large ice cube (or several smaller cubes), then stir for about 20 seconds to chill and integrate the agave and bitters.
Transfer (if applicable)
If you mixed in a mixing glass, strain the cocktail into a chilled Old Fashioned glass over a single large ice cube. If you mixed in the serving glass, simply leave it as is.
Garnish
Cut a 1.5–2 inch strip of orange peel using a peeler or paring knife, avoiding too much white pith. Hold the peel over the drink and gently express the oils by giving it a firm twist, skin side down, so the oils spray onto the surface of the cocktail.
Rub the peel around the rim of the glass to transfer additional aroma, then drop the twist into the drink as garnish.
Serve immediately. The mezcal adds a smoky backbone while the reposado provides warmth and agave nectar rounds the edges; sip slowly.
