Meatballs

House Red Sauce

Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare the Meatball Mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, eggs, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. You should yield approximately 12 meatballs.

  3. 3

    Cook the Meatballs

In a large skillet over medium heat, add a little olive oil. Cook the meatballs for about 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through.

House Red Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté the Base

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 5

    Simmer the Sauce

Add the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir to combine and let simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 6

    Add Meatballs to Sauce

Once the meatballs are cooked, transfer them to the sauce and let them simmer together for an additional 10 minutes to meld the flavors.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 7

    Prepare the Bread

Slice the Turano French bread pieces lengthwise without cutting all the way through, creating a pocket for the meatballs.

  2. 8

    Assemble the Sandwich

Place 3 meatballs in each piece of bread. Spoon a generous amount of the house red sauce over the meatballs.

  3. 9

    Add Cheese and Toppings

Top the meatballs with 3 slices of provolone cheese for each sandwich. Optionally, add sweet peppers or hot giardiniera according to your taste.

  4. 10

    Melt the Cheese

Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

  5. 11

    Serve

Carefully remove from the broiler, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately.
