Sushi Rice

Fillings

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a pot, combine rinsed sushi rice and 2.5 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes until rice is tender.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the seasoning mixture. Allow to cool.

Prepare Fillings

  1. 4

    Slice Vegetables

Using a sharp knife, thinly slice the cucumber, avocado, and carrot into long strips.

  2. 5

    Prepare Tuna

If using fresh tuna, slice it into long strips for filling. Ensure the fish is sushi-grade.

Assemble Sushi

  1. 6

    Prepare Nori

Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down.

  2. 7

    Spread Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking, take a handful of sushi rice, and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  3. 8

    Add Fillings

Place strips of cucumber, avocado, carrot, and tuna across the center of the rice.

  4. 9

    Roll Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi away from you, applying gentle pressure to form a tight roll. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.

  5. 10

    Slice the Roll

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts for cleaner slices.

Serve

  1. 11

    Plate and Garnish

Arrange the sushi pieces on a plate. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
