Brewing Instructions
- 1
Mash the Grains
In a large brew kettle, heat 3 liters of water to about 160°F (71°C). Add the Pilsner malt and Carapils malt, maintaining the temperature at around 150°F (65°C) for 60 minutes.
- 2
Sparge the Grains
After the mash, sparge the grains with an additional 3 liters of water heated to 170°F (77°C) to extract the sugars.
- 3
Boil the Wort
Bring the wort to a boil and add the Saaz hops. Boil for 60 minutes, adding the Hallertau hops during the last 15 minutes of the boil.
- 4
Cool the Wort
After boiling, cool the wort quickly using an immersion chiller or an ice bath until it reaches about 70°F (21°C).
- 5
Fermentation
Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermentation vessel. Pitch the German lager yeast and seal the vessel with an airlock. Ferment at around 50°F (10°C) for 2-3 weeks.
- 6
Bottling
Once fermentation is complete, dissolve the priming sugar in a small amount of water, boil to sterilize, and add to the beer before bottling. Bottle and cap the beer, allowing it to carbonate for another 1-2 weeks at room temperature.
- 7
Enjoy
After carbonation, chill the bottles and enjoy your homemade Provo Girl Pilsner!
