Method
Preparation
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Melt Chocolate and Butter
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
Making the Cake Batter
- 3
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- 4
- 5
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- 6
Add Chocolate Mixture
Fold the melted chocolate mixture into the batter gently until fully incorporated.
Baking the Cake
- 7
Pour Batter into Pans
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- 8
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean (a few moist crumbs are okay).
- 9
Cool the Cakes
Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, carefully remove the cakes from the pans and let them cool completely on wire racks.
Assembling and Serving
- 10
Layer the Cakes
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. If desired, you can slice a small portion off the top to make it level.
- 11
Add Molten Center
Spoon the molten chocolate center onto the first layer. Place the second cake layer on top.
- 12
Dust with Powdered Sugar
Dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar, and serve with fresh berries and whipped cream on the side.
