Drain the artichoke hearts and pat them dry with a paper towel.

Soak in Buttermilk
In a bowl, soak the artichoke hearts in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.

In another bowl, mix the flour, five spice powder, salt, and black pepper.

Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot.

Coat the Artichokes
Remove the artichoke hearts from the buttermilk and dredge them in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

Carefully place the coated artichoke hearts in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.

Remove the fried artichokes from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil. Season with salt and black pepper.
