Method
Pasta Preparation
- 1
Cook the Spaghetti
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.
- 2
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a little pasta water if desired for later use.
Marinara Sauce Preparation
- 3
Sauté the Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- 4
Add Tomatoes
Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon. Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, red chili flakes, salt, and black pepper.
- 5
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.
- 6
Finish the Sauce
Remove from heat and stir in the fresh basil leaves. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.
Combining
- 7
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained spaghetti to the marinara sauce in the skillet. Toss to combine, adding a splash of reserved pasta water if the sauce is too thick.
- 8
Serve
Serve hot, garnished with additional fresh basil leaves if desired.
