Preparation of Pasta
- 1
Cook the Mostaccioli
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the mostaccioli and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Making the Sauce
- 2
Sauté Garlic
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- 3
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and add dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cheese Mixture Preparation
- 4
Combine Cheese Ingredients
In a bowl, mix together ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, the egg, and chopped parsley until well combined. Set aside.
Assembly and Baking
- 5
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Once the sauce is ready, add the drained mostaccioli to the skillet and mix well to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
- 6
Layer the Dish
In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the mostaccioli and sauce mixture. Then, dollop the ricotta mixture on top. Spread the remaining mostaccioli and sauce over it.
- 7
Add Mozzarella
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the mostaccioli.
- 8
Bake
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the dish for about 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- 9
Garnish and Serve
Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, then garnish with fresh basil before serving.
