Method

Cake Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cake.

  2. 2

    Prepare Cake Pans

Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to ensure the cakes can be removed easily after baking.

  3. 3

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  4. 4

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, combine the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat together until smooth.

  5. 5

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  6. 6

    Add Boiling Water

Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

  7. 7

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  8. 8

    Cool the Cakes

Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting Directions

  1. 9

    Prepare Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the unsweetened cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with whole milk, until smooth and fluffy.

  2. 10

    Add Vanilla

Stir in the vanilla extract until fully combined.

  3. 11

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
