Marinara Sauce

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Once boiling, add a generous amount of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.

Making the Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Aromatics

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  3. 6

    Simmer Sauce

Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

  4. 7

    Add Fresh Basil

Once the sauce has thickened, stir in the chopped fresh basil and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Combining and Serving

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the marinara sauce. Toss well to combine, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time if needed to loosen the sauce.

  2. 9

    Serve

Serve the spaghetti hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and additional fresh basil if desired.
