Pasta

Topping (optional)

Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain Pasta

Once the macaroni is cooked, drain it in a colander and set aside.

Cheese Sauce Preparation

  1. 3

    Make the Roux

In the same pot, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and golden.

  2. 4

    Add Milk

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture begins to thicken, about 5 minutes.

  3. 5

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce heat to low and add the shredded sharp cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combine and Serve

  1. 6

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine thoroughly.

  2. 7

    Add Topping (Optional)

If desired, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a separate bowl, mix the bread crumbs and grated parmesan cheese. Sprinkle the mixture over the mac and cheese in a baking dish.

  3. 8

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until the topping is golden brown.

  4. 9

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade mac and cheese!
