Bread Ingredients

Method

Bread Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, vegetable oil, and honey. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape the Challah

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long strand and braid them together.

  6. 6

    Second Rise

Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.

  7. 7

    Preheat and Prepare for Baking

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top of the challah with an egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

  8. 8

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  9. 9

    Cool

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
