Dough Preparation
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine masa harina, baking powder, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
- 2
Cream Shortening
In another bowl, beat the vegetable shortening until fluffy using a hand mixer or stand mixer.
- 3
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the dry mixture to the creamed shortening, alternating with vegetable broth until fully incorporated. The dough should be soft and pliable.
Filling Preparation
- 4
Prepare Filling
In a medium bowl, combine shredded chicken, chopped onion, salsa verde, chopped cilantro, and salt. Mix until well combined.
Tamale Assembly
- 5
Soak Corn Husks
Soak the corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften them. Drain and lay them flat.
- 6
Fill Tamales
Place a corn husk on a flat surface with the wider end facing you. Spread about 1/4 cup of dough onto the center of the husk, leaving space at the ends. Add about 2 tablespoons of the filling on top of the dough.
- 7
Fold and Wrap
Fold the sides of the husk over the filling, and then fold the bottom end up to secure the filling. Repeat with the remaining husks, dough, and filling.
- 8
Steam Tamales
Place the tamales upright in a steamer basket. Steam for about 1 to 1.5 hours until the dough is firm and pulls away from the husk easily.
