Method

For the Tart Crust

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter and mix with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Add Ice Water

Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.

  3. 3

    Chill the Dough

Shape the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  4. 4

    Roll Out the Dough

After chilling, roll out the dough on a floured surface to fit your tart pan. Place the rolled dough in the pan and trim the edges.

For the Apple Filling

  1. 5

    Prepare the Apples

In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are well coated.

  2. 6

    Fill the Tart

Pour the apple mixture into the prepared tart crust, spreading it evenly.

For Baking the Tart

  1. 7

    Bake the Tart

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the tart for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.

  2. 8

    Cool the Tart

Once baked, remove the tart from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

For the Caramel Sauce

  1. 9

    Make the Caramel

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar and cook, stirring constantly until it melts and turns amber in color.

  2. 10

    Add Butter and Cream

Remove from heat and immediately stir in the unsalted butter and heavy cream. Be careful as it may bubble up. Stir until smooth.

  3. 11

    Finish the Sauce

Add vanilla extract and salt to the caramel sauce, stirring well to combine. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Serving

  1. 12

    Serve the Tart

Slice the apple tart and serve warm with a generous drizzle of caramel sauce on top.
