Muddle the Ingredients
In a mixing glass, place the sugar cube and add the Angostura bitters. Muddle the sugar and bitters together until the sugar is mostly dissolved.

Add Whiskey
Pour in the bourbon or rye whiskey over the muddled sugar and bitters mix.

Add Ice
Add the large ice cube or ice sphere to the mixing glass.

Stir
Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for about 20-30 seconds until well chilled and diluted.

Strain into Glass
Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass over the ice cube.

Garnish
Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink and then drop the peel into the glass. Add the maraschino cherry as a garnish.
