Method

Meatball Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  3. 3

    Form Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs, approximately 1 inch in diameter.

  4. 4

    Bake Meatballs

Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 5

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil.

  2. 6

    Sauté Onion and Garlic

Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then add minced garlic and sauté for another minute.

  3. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.

  4. 8

    Simmer Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 9

    Combine Meatballs and Sauce

Once the meatballs are done baking, add them to the marinara sauce and let them simmer together for 5 minutes.

  2. 10

    Prepare Sub Rolls

Slice the sub rolls open without cutting all the way through.

  3. 11

    Assemble Sandwiches

Place 2-3 meatballs along with sauce into each sub roll. Top each sandwich with 2 slices of provolone cheese and sprinkle with grated Romano cheese.

  4. 12

    Melt Cheese

If desired, place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes to melt the provolone cheese.
