Sushi Rice
Filling
Optional Toppings
Method
Prepare Sushi Rice
- 1
Rinse and Cook the Rice
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes or until the water is absorbed.
- 2
Season the Rice
Once the rice is cooked, remove it from heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes. In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Fluff the rice with a fork and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Let the rice cool to room temperature.
Prepare Filling
- 3
Slice the Salmon
Using a sharp knife, slice the fresh salmon fillet into thin strips, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
- 4
- 5
Soften the Cream Cheese
Let the cream cheese sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to soften for easier spreading.
Assemble the Roll
- 6
Lay Out the Nori
Place a bamboo sushi mat on a clean surface. Place one sheet of nori shiny side down onto the mat.
- 7
Spread the Rice
With wet hands, take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about an inch at the top edge.
- 8
Add the Filling
In the center of the rice, place a line of salmon strips, followed by a line of cream cheese, and top with avocado slices.
- 9
Roll the Sushi
Lift the edge of the mat closest to you and begin to roll the sushi away from you, pressing gently but firmly. Roll until the nori seals itself at the edge.
- 10
Slice the Roll
Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces, wiping the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to keep it clean.
Serve
- 11
Plate the Roll
Arrange the sushi pieces on a plate. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side for dipping.
