Prepare the Glass
Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice water. Set aside while you prepare the cocktail.

Mix the Ingredients
In a mixing glass, combine the Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, simple syrup, and Jerry Thomas bitters.

Stir
Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir the mixture until well chilled, about 30 seconds.

Serve
Discard the ice water from the old-fashioned glass. Strain the mixture into the chilled glass over a large ice cube.

Garnish
Gently express the oils from the orange peel over the drink and drop it in as garnish.
