Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare Meatball Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, bread crumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Form Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Set aside on a baking sheet.

  3. 3

    Cook Meatballs

In a large skillet over medium heat, add a little olive oil. Once hot, add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Sausage

  1. 4

    Cook Sausage

In the same skillet used for the meatballs, add the Italian sausage links. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Sunday Gravy

  1. 5

    Sauté Vegetables

In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, red wine (if using), and bay leaf. Stir to combine.

  3. 7

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 8

    Combine Meatballs and Sausage

Add the browned meatballs and sausages into the sauce. Cover and simmer for an additional 20-30 minutes to let the flavors meld.
