Directions

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 30-40 minutes until onions are caramelized and golden brown.

  2. 2

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Stir in minced garlic, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Pour in beef broth and white wine. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Prepare Baguette

While the soup simmers, slice the baguette into 1-inch thick slices. Toast the slices in the oven until golden brown.

  4. 4

    Assemble Soup

Remove the bay leaf from the soup. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of toasted baguette on top of each bowl and generously sprinkle with Swiss and Parmesan cheese.

  5. 5

    Broil

Place the assembled bowls under the broiler for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

  6. 6

    Serve

Carefully remove the bowls from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your French Onion Soup Au Gratin!
