Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onions into even rings.

  2. 2

    Melt the Butter and Oil

In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Caramelize the Onions

Add the sliced onions to the pot and stir to coat them in the butter and oil. Cook for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and caramelized.

  2. 4

    Deglaze the Pan

Pour in the dry white wine and scrape the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits. Allow the wine to reduce by half.

  3. 5

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Stir in the beef broth, thyme, bay leaves, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  4. 6

    Simmer the Soup

Reduce the heat to low and let the soup simmer for 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Serving

  1. 7

    Prepare the Baguette

While the soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the French baguette into 1-inch thick slices and place them on a baking sheet.

  2. 8

    Toast the Baguette

Toast the baguette slices in the oven for about 10 minutes until lightly golden.

  3. 9

    Assemble the Soup

Remove the bay leaves from the soup. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, place a toasted baguette slice on top of each bowl, and sprinkle generously with Gruyère cheese.

  4. 10

    Melt the Cheese

Broil the bowls in the oven for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

  5. 11

    Serve

Carefully remove the bowls from the oven and serve hot. Enjoy your homemade French Onion Soup!
