Sushi Rice

Fillings

Nori and Accompaniments

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse and Cook Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice and 2.5 cups of water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. 2

    Season the Rice

In a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until the sugar and salt dissolve. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Let it cool to room temperature.

Prepare Fillings

  1. 3

    Prepare Fresh Ingredients

Slice the fresh salmon into thin strips. Julienne the cucumber and carrot. Slice the avocado into thin wedges. Set all the fillings aside for assembly.

  2. 4

    Prepare Cream Cheese

Soften the cream cheese at room temperature if it's too firm to spread.

Assemble Sushi Rolls

  1. 5

    Lay Out Nori

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a clean surface. Lay a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on the mat.

  2. 6

    Spread Sushi Rice

With wet hands, take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge. Press the rice down gently.

  3. 7

    Add Fillings

Place a line of salmon, cucumber, avocado, carrot, and a thin layer of cream cheese horizontally across the rice.

  4. 8

    Roll the Sushi

Starting from the edge closest to you, roll the sushi mat away from you, pressing gently but firmly to keep the roll tight. Continue rolling until you reach the exposed edge of the nori, and seal with a little water.

  5. 9

    Slice and Serve

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
