For the Patty Melt

Method

For the Patty Melt

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

Slice the onion thinly. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Beef Patty

In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into two equal patties, making them slightly larger than the bread as they will shrink while cooking.

  3. 3

    Cook the Beef Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high. Once hot, add the beef patties. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

  4. 4

    Add the Cheese

During the last minute of cooking, place two slices of Swiss cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet with a lid to help melt the cheese.

  5. 5

    Toast the Bread

In a separate skillet or griddle, toast the slices of marble rye bread until golden brown on one side. Once toasted, spread 1000 Island dressing on the un-toasted side of each slice.

  6. 6

    Assemble the Patty Melt

On the dressing-covered side of two slices of bread, place the cooked patties with melted cheese and top with the caramelized onions. Close the sandwiches with the remaining slices of bread, dressing side down.

  7. 7

    Final Toast

In the same skillet, carefully place the assembled sandwiches and toast on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until the bread is crispy and golden brown.

  8. 8

    Serve

Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately with additional 1000 Island dressing on the side if desired.
