Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dipping Sauce (Optional)

If you're using a dipping sauce, prepare it by mixing ranch dressing and hot sauce together in a bowl. Adjust the amount of hot sauce according to your spice preference.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Cheese Curds

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat the egg and mix in the milk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick and slightly lumpy.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  2. 6

    Coat the Cheese Curds

Working in batches, dip the cheese curds into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.

  3. 7

    Fry the Cheese Curds

Carefully drop the battered cheese curds into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.

  4. 8

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried cheese curds from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauce.
