Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a rolling boil.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and stir continuously for about 1 minute to form a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Remove the pot from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season Sauce

Stir in 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of paprika for flavor.

Combining and Baking

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring to coat the pasta evenly.

  2. 10

    Optional Topping

In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture over the mac and cheese.

  3. 11

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
